Due to recent time contraints I am unable to keep up community knits. Please don't stop knitting, crocheting or weaving! And if you find yourself with extra knits in the fall, please think of your local food bank, battered women's shelter, or retirement home. All places in need of your God given talent.

Thank you to all of you that donated lovely scarves and hats this month. Our first distribution was a complete success, with one down side...we ran out of scarves and hats! So if you are still knitting, weaving, or crocheting that is wonderful! Keep the gift of warmth coming!

Free scarf 'V' stitch crochet pattern

This pattern is so versatile and extremely easy for the beginner. It works up quickly in fuzzy type yarns ie: fun fur, and Divine, yet looks great with any sport weight yarn. For an interesting twist try creating this in a varigated yarn.

For this scarf pattern I will be using a J hook and a sport weight yarn, Simply Soft.
'V' stitch beginning,chain multiples of 3 plus 4.

Chain 22
Row 1:
dbl into 4th chain from hook
sk 2 ch
*dbl, ch 1, dbl in next chain*
repeat to end
turn
Row 2:
chain 3, dbl in top of 'V' stitch
*in top of next 'V' stitch dbl, ch 1, dbl*
repeat to end

Continue Row 2 until desired length.

sk=skip
dbl=double
ch=chain
*=the asterisks enclose the pattern that is to be repeated

This pattern is wonderful for baby blankets, shawls, scarfs, and capes. Try your hand at it. Simple AND easy.

Guilt free fiber frenzy shopping

Have you ever wondered just how you can sneak yet more yarn into your house without having to hide it under the bed, stuff it into empty cereal boxes, or hide it in the dryer? (The dryer is my favorite..my husband never, ever, looks in there, afterall it eats sox, I bet he wonders if it will eat husbands too!)
I'll tell you how, its actually pretty simple. You can have a guilt free fiber shopping spree when you are buying yarn to make scarves and hats for those in need.
What better excuse does one need to quench ones ferocious fiber appetite?

Even MORE donations

Today we received three more hand made scarves in the mail. Two were knit and one was crocheted. The crocheted one is made of an incredibly soft grey acrylic fiber that just screams "snuggle with me!"
Thank you again for your support. These lovely scarves will be in a new home by the end of the month.

Commuunity Knits has just received its first donation of hand knit hats and scarves! How exciting! There are a total of eight hand knit hats,four knit scarves, and two crocheted scarves.

Understanding those confusing patterns

Does your pattern resemble an odd form of jibberish? No worries. Don't give up, there is still hope.
There are many sites out there designed to help you with understanding knitting and crochet patterns.
You Tube has a plethora of videos that show quite clearly how to cast on, knit, purl, and cast off. Watch a few videos and try your hand at some of them, and then head back to your pattern and see that you are now somewhat bilingual. What once was jibberish is now slightly understandable. You now speak knitter. Congratulations!

Community Knits

Welcome to our first blog post!!!

Do you love to knit or crochet and find yourself with a few extra hand knit scarves, mittens or hats?

Community Knits may be just the thing for you.

Community Knits began in 2009 with a few friends that simply loved to knit and crochet. Like all avid knitter’s a few good movies and a couple of rainy days left them with an excess of knitted scarves. All their children and friends had enough scarves to outfit an army so these ladies came up with the idea to give back to their community. Community Knits donates hats, scarves, and mittens (newly handmade) to local food pantries so that they may distribute them to our local families in need.

Just think, your love of knitting and crocheting can turn into a warm and loving gift for many of those that are so in need of warmth in our colder seasons.
